This naturally preserved environment and the accumulation of artistic treasures relating to the village's more than a thousand years history have succeeded in the spreading abroad of Conques' culture and tourism. This widespread recognition has been promoted by both national and international institutions.
In fact, the village and its heritage are both protected under the title of Historical Monuments and the label Plus beaux villages de France. For its naturally preserved surroundings, the site itself is registered in the Inventaire des sites. Since 1998, Conques abbey-church and the pilgrims' bridge built over the Dourdou river are registered on the list of worldwide heritage sites by UNESCO, as they lie on the French paths to Santiago de Compostela. In 2009, Conques received the title of Great Site of Midi-Pyrenees Region.
